Chapter Eleven

We are sitting in a black SUV with dark tinted windows. No one can see in, and it’s dark looking out, but at least there’s sun. The back is full of bags, and Teague is at the wheel, with Roman in the front and Elon beside me in the back seat.

I cannot get over how strange it is to no longer be their captive, but their companion, at least until the next full moon. It’s a far cry from what I imagined was about to happen and yet, here I am. We leave the building where I’ve been held against my will, where I tried to escape, and where I never knew that I was actually being protected and cared for.

Even if it still just feels like I was a prisoner.

I swallow a hard knot, trying to think of anything but the coming full moon, and turn to look at Elon, who seems really happy.

“So, you guys are tracking this succubus …”

“We. We are all tracking her.” He winks at me, and I nod. Okay, he’s right. I guess I’m tracking her with them. It’s probably good to be included in the team—it’s what I asked them for.

“Right. So, how do you track her? How do you know where she’s going?”

Elon turns toward me slightly, happy to be engaged in a conversation with me.

“Well, for starters, there’s her scent.”

I think back to the bar. “Yeah … I think I actually caught that. Cookies or something.”

Elon shrugs. “Well, it’s a succubus trick that the scent can change; it’s whatever will draw the people near her the easiest. So, like, when she’s by you, you smell cookies. If she was by me, I might smell fresh pine or something. Wildflowers. Honey. It’s whatever appeals most to her possible victim.”

I shift my gaze to the driver’s seat. “What did you smell on her, Teague?”

He clears his throat and glances out of the driver’s side window. “Leather. Fine leather.”

I chuckle softly. Somehow, I’m not at all surprised.

“It’s one of her predatory mechanisms,” Elon continues.

“What would you smell?” I ask Roman. He just stares out the window.

“A rat.”

The guys groan a little and I look back at Elon.

“So, if you all smell different things, how can you track her?”

Elon lifts his finger to make his point. “That’s the trick. See, as shifters and especially as wolves, we have heightened senses. Her scent is much stronger to us than it should be, so if Teague smelled leather, it wouldn’t be like walking into a leather store for most people, it would be like being five miles away and still smelling like you just walked into a leather store. Make sense?”

I nod, even though it makes absolutely no sense to me. How could it?

Elon continues. “We know that if one scent stands out that much stronger than all the other scents around us, then it’s her. Or probably her. Think of scent like the volume on a radio. Pretend you have ten radios turned on, all within twenty feet of you.
